They are totally laid-back, casual people and don’t like formal spaces.

The couple’s names are Fred and Birdie. This family is into fishing and spending time on the beach, while also appreciating a night in with a good meal and relaxing on the porch. They love trying new recipes and creating their own dishes that the Birdie can add to her restaurant menu. When not experiencing with new cuisine, they are chasing their 7-year-old daughter, Casey, around and giving her as many experiences and learning opportunities as possible. Birdie loves reading and shell collecting in her free time and is passing the love of these activities down to her daughter. Fred is trying to make Casey into a tomboy, teaching her how to sail and fish.

SUSTAINABLE MATERIAL RATIONALE

For my materials and furniture selections I made sure to keep in mind sustainable companies and look for certifications and durability. I chose ENERGY STAR appliances so that the overall consumption of energy in the household would be reduced. I also chose most of my furniture from West Elm because they are a sustainably conscious company. They are committed to Fair Trade, have many products that are GREENGUARD Gold or STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX standards, and tested for harmful chemicals. West Elm also repurposes materials such as wood and plastic bottles to keep them from going into the landfill. I chose many products that are made out of reclaimed wood for my project. I made sure that any textiles that I chose to replace any existing furniture covering were durable and made to resist wear for a long time. This means that the clients would not have to replace the furniture as quickly, leading to less waste in the future. My space also houses many plants, which helps to purify the interior air of the house. As long as they are taken care of, the plants will live for a long time and be able to help clean any pollutants that may enter the house.
